Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Does Bigger Trailer Mean Faster Speed
Trailer tires are only rated to go 65 miles per hour unless indicated. Trailer tires are built with a thicker sidewall, to handle vertical loads, that get hot enough to fail when you exceed 65 miles per hour.

  • Can I Put a 12" Wheel ST145/R12 on My Malone EcoLight 2-Boat V-Rack Kayak Trailer?
Hello Mr P, I reached out to my contact at Malone, he informed me that on the EcoLight Trailers you cannot go larger than a 8" wheel. With that being said, you cannot put the # AM35354 on your EcoLight. For your Malone EcoLight I recommend the Kenda 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM30070 as we do not have one in black. What was the reason for the larger wheels?

  • Looking For a 12" Wheel and Tire to Upgrade from 8" Wheels On Jetski Trailer With 2.82" Pilot Holes
I have some good news for you Derek, the hub pilot of trailer wheels is not as important as on most vehicles since smaller trailer wheels like yours are going to be lug centric and not hub centric. So the Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Black Mod Wheel # AM35354 you found will fit a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern hub with the larger 3.19" pilot hole. The wheel centers itself on the wheel studs with the tapered lug nuts rather than relying on the hub center to position the...

  • Do You Carry a QuickTrim Hub Cover for My Wheel that has 5 on 4.25" Bolt Pattern?
Hello Joe, We do not carry anything in that size. When I look up that bolt pattern I see that it is common on some Fords, Lincolns, Volvos, and Jaguars. When it comes to the trailer world it is listed as "very rare". It might be worth updating your hubs and wheel to a more common bolt pattern. For an idler hub you could go with # AKIHUB-545-2-LF-2K, if you have brakes # AKHD-545-2-EZ-2K. For tires and wheels you could go with the Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12"...

Hey Eric, yes you can replace the wheel/tires of your Malone Microsport part # MPG461GU with the ST145R12 part # AM35354 that you referenced. The sizes are very similar so there would be no clearance issues. Were you wanting to increase speed rating?

  • Can Steel Powder Coated Wheels Be Used On A Boat Trailer?
Hey Neil, thanks for reaching out. The tire and rim combo # AM35354 is a steel powder coated wheel. It can be used on a boat trailer, but generally we recommend going with either a galvanized or aluminum wheel for boat trailers. The powder coating is durable, but in marine environments, it can and likely will succumb to rust eventually. Galvanized or aluminum wheels are not going to rust, which is why they are more suited for being submerged. If your trailer is only submerged twice a...

  • Looking For Spare Rim And Tire For 1980s Boat Trailer
Hello Richard, thanks for reaching out. All of the trailer wheels we offer attach with lug nuts, so if you are needing one of those old style bolt-on wheels I am afraid we would not be able to provide anything like that. We do have some 12" 5 on 4-1/2" wheels but our would have a 3.19" pilot hole and they are all lug centric wheels intended for 1/2"-20 lug nuts. Like part # AM20134 for example. It sounds like you might need new hubs to be able to use our wheel though.

Hey Neil. The # AM30861 and # AM35354 are very similar in size. The Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire # AM35354 is actually slightly smaller in diameter than the Kenda 5.30-12 tires, so out of the two 12" tires you mentioned, this will be your best bet for an upgrade. I do still suggest that you measure to make 100% sure you will have enough clearance to fit a tire 5.7" wide and 21.3" in diameter.

  • Will ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tires Fit a 2019 Flagstaff 206LTD?
You are going to have to take some clearance measurements with your 145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire # AM35354 to determine if the larger Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Black Mod Wheel # AM31990 is going to fit. The 175/80-13 is 2.8" taller and 1.3" wider. For vertical clearance we like to see at least 3" for the suspension to travel so with the height difference you will want to see at least 4.4" with your current tires. The most common 5-bolt trailer wheel lug pattern is 5-on-4-1/2, but since there are actually four different 5-lug patterns in use you will want to refer to the linked article for help determining which you have. You will also want to verify the size and load range rating of the tires you have installed on the trailer to ensure you select a match. The Kenda Karrier ST145/80R12 # AM35354 will actually keep you at pretty much the exact same size as your current tire/wheel. This will be 5.7 inches wide and have a diameter of 21.3 inches. • Recommended Tire, Wheel, Center Cap, and Lug Nuts for a Triton LTWCII PWC Boat Trailer
According to my research your Triton LTWCII PWC trailer has a GVWR of 2,500 lbs so while the Kenda ST145R12 Radial Trailer Tire w/12" Aluminum HWT S5 Black Wheel # AM35354 you referenced will fit, the tire only has a Load Range D (1,220 lbs at 65 psi) rating so with 2 tires the most you can carry is 2,440 lbs. As long as your overall weight of the boat and trailer don't exceed this then this combination is a great option for your trailer. I also recommend picking up the following center...

The tire size 145/80-12 does fit on the same rim size as what your 4.80-12 fits on. For that we have the # AM10140 which is a radial trailer tire size. This would basically be just .8 inches taller overall so it would fit and work well.

Jumping from 12 inch wheels to 14 inch wheels is a large jump. You'd me moving from a diameter of 20.5 inches to about 26.3 inches. If you have the room, that will work but you do need to have about 4 inches above your tire for proper suspension movement (deflection). My recommendation is to stay with your 12 inch wheels and use the Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Black Mod Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - LR D # AM35354. • Can Tires Be Upgraded to Larger Size on Carry-On Trailer With 4.80-12 Tires
Hi Jefferey; the # AM35354 is only slightly larger so you will probably be able to use it to replace your current tires. However, you will still need to measure for clearance to be sure. This ST145/R12 tire has an outer diameter of 21.3" and 5.7" section width. Your current 4.80-12 tire probably has an outer diameter of 20.5" and a 4.8" section width. This means you would lose .45" of clearance on the inside and .4" on top of the tire. At a minimum you want to have 3" on top and 2" on...

The Kenda Karrier ST145/R12 Radial Trailer Tire with 12" Black Mod Wheel # AM35354 does not come balanced, nor does any trailer tire and wheel. While you can have them balanced if you'd like to, it really isn't necessary for performance so long as your tow vehicle tires are balanced. The reason for that is the trailer is simply tracking as opposed to being responsible for steering/turning. The tires and suspension on the trailer won't be affected at all by not being perfectly balanced,...

The difference in section width between a 5.30-12 and a 145/12 is just 0.1 inches. Only half of that is applied towards the trailer. On wheel and tire combo # AM35354 the wheel is a black mod wheel with a zero offset meaning that the mounting surface of the wheel is in the dead center equal distance from either sidewall.
